Abstract. Polyps of the tropical corallimorpharian Rhodactis rhodostoma segregate sexes between center and edge positions within aggregations produced by clonal replication. On a reef flat at Eilat, northern Red Sea, infertile polyps and males occur mainly along the edges of clonal aggregations, while females mostly occupy central positions within each aggregation. In addition, on the inner to middle reef flat where polyps of this species are abundant, aggregations consist mostly of females. On the outer reef flat, where polyps are rare, a sampled aggregation consisted mostly of males and infertile polyps. Male polyps are significantly smaller than females, and the smallest polyps are infertile. Fecundity increases significantly with polyp size in females, but testis size and number do not vary with body size in males. Oocytes are present in polyps during most of the year and gradually increase in size until annual spawning in June-July during the period of maximum day length. Testes do not vary significantly in size during the year and remain a small proportion of body mass (>8%). In contrast, females invest up to 30% of their body mass into gonads during the months immediately before spawning. The annual spawning of gametes coincides with a temporary drop in the frequency of clonal replication by polyps. We estimate that each female polyp of R. rhodostoma may release up to 3000 large eggs (500 μm in maximum diameter) each summer. The high investment of this corallimorpharian in sexual production of planktonic propagules may allow rapid dispersal to reef habitats distant from parent populations. 相似文献

Abstract: The humoral immune response to simian varicella virus (SVV) was investigated following primary and secondary experimental infection of African green monkeys. Neutralization and immunoprecipitation assays were used to determine antibody titers to SVV throughout the course of infection. The immune response to specific viral polypeptides was analyzed by immunoprecipitation analysis. Introduction
Low-to-moderate intensity exercise improves muscle contractile properties and endurance capacity in multiple sclerosis (MS). The impact of high intensity exercise remains unknown.Methods
Thirty-four MS patients were randomized into a sedentary control group (SED, n = 11) and 2 exercise groups that performed 12 weeks of a high intensity interval (HITR, n = 12) or high intensity continuous cardiovascular training (HCTR, n = 11), both in combination with resistance training. M.vastus lateralis fiber cross sectional area (CSA) and proportion, knee-flexor/extensor strength, body composition, maximal endurance capacity and self-reported physical activity levels were assessed before and after 12 weeks.Results
Compared to SED, 12 weeks of high intensity exercise increased mean fiber CSA (HITR: +21±7%, HCTR: +23±5%). Furthermore, fiber type I CSA increased in HCTR (+29±6%), whereas type II (+23±7%) and IIa (+23±6%,) CSA increased in HITR. Muscle strength improved in HITR and HCTR (between +13±7% and +45±20%) and body fat percentage tended to decrease (HITR: -3.9±2.0% and HCTR: -2.5±1.2%). Furthermore, endurance capacity (Wmax +21±4%, time to exhaustion +24±5%, VO2max +17±5%) and lean tissue mass (+1.4±0.5%) only increased in HITR. Finally self-reported physical activity levels increased 73±19% and 86±27% in HCTR and HITR, respectively.Conclusion
High intensity cardiovascular exercise combined with resistance training was safe, well tolerated and improved muscle contractile characteristics and endurance capacity in MS.Trial Registration

interact with sea anemone physiology and Symbiodinium (endosymbiotic dinoflagellate) genetic identity under field conditions. On Red Sea coral reefs, we measured variation in
ammonia concentrations near anemones, excretion rates of anemonefish, physiological parameters of anemones and Symbiodinium, and genetic identity of Symbiodinium within anemones. Ammonia concentrations among anemone tentacles were up to 49% above background levels, and anemonefish excreted
ammonia significantly more rapidly after diurnal feeding than they did after nocturnal rest, similar to their excretion patterns
under laboratory conditions. Levels of 4 physiological parameters (anemone protein content, and Symbiodinium abundance, chlorophyll a concentration, and division rate) were similar to those known for laboratory-cultured anemones, and in the field did not
depend on the number of anemonefish per anemone or depth below sea surface. Symbiodinium abundance varied significantly with irradiance in the shaded reef microhabitats occupied by anemones. Most anemones at all
depths harbored a novel Symbiodinium 18S rDNA variant within internal transcribed spacer region 2 (ITS2) type C1, while the rest hosted known ITS2 type C1. Association
with Symbiodinium Clade C is consistent with the symbiotic pattern of these anemones on other Indo-Pacific reefs, but the C1 variant of Symbiodinium identified here has not been described previously. We conclude that in the field, anemonefish excrete ammonia at rapid rates
that correlate with elevated concentrations among host anemone tentacles. Limited natural variation in anemonefish abundance

The membrane composition and lipid physical properties have been systematically investigated as a function of fatty acid composition for a series of Acholeplasma laidlawii B membrane preparations made homogeneous in various fatty acids by growing cells on single fatty acids and avidin, a potent fatty acid synthetic inhibitor. The membrane protein molecular weight distribution is essentially constant as a function of fatty acid composition, but the lipid/protein ratio varies over a 2-fold range when different fatty acid growth supplements are used. The membrane lipid head-group composition varies somewhat under these conditions, particularly in the ratio of the two major neutral glycolipids. Differential thermal analytical investigations of the thermotropic phase transitions of various combinations of membrane components suggest that these compositional changes are unlikely to result in qualitative changes in the nature of lipid-protein or lipid-lipid interactions, although lesser changes of a quantitative nature probably do occur. The total lipids of membranes made homogeneous in their lipid fatty acyl chain composition exhibit sharper than normal gel-to-liquid-crystalline phase transitions of which midpoint temperatures correlate very well with the phase transition temperatures of synthetic hydrated phosphatidylcholines with like acyl chains. Our results indicate that using avidin and suitable fatty acids to grow A. laidlawii B, it is possible to manipulate the position and the sharpness of the membrane lipid phase transition widely and independently without causing major modifications in other aspects of the membrane composition. This fact makes the fatty acid-homogeneous A. laidlawii B membrane a very useful biological membrane preparation in which to study lipid physical properties and their functional consequences. 相似文献

A fundamental issue in the design and development of antimicrobials is the lack of understanding of complex modes of action and how this complexity affects potential pathways for resistance evolution. Bac8c (RIWVIWRR-NH2) is an 8 amino acid antimicrobial peptide (AMP) that has been shown to have enhanced activity against a range of pathogenic Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as yeast. We have previously demonstrated that Bac8c appears to interfere with multiple targets, at least in part through the disruption of cytoplasmic membrane related functions, and that resistance to this peptide does not easily develop using standard laboratory methods. Here, we applied a genomics approach, SCalar Analysis of Library Enrichement (SCALEs), to map the effect of gene overexpression onto Bac8c resistance in parallel for all genes and gene combinations (up to ∼ 10 adjacent genes) in the E. coli genome (a total of ∼ 500,000 individual clones were mapped). Our efforts identified an elaborate network of genes for which overexpression leads to low-level resistance to Bac8c (including biofilm formation, multi-drug transporters, etc). This data was analyzed to provide insights into the complex relationships between mechanisms of action and potential routes by which resistance to this synthetic AMP can develop. 相似文献

The zooplankton fauna of the Zeeschelde estuary (Belgium) wasinvestigated over 10 months by means of monthly sampling. CanonicalCorrespondence Analysis (CCA) was used to relate the speciesdistribution to environmental factors. The variation in thespecies data was significantly (P < 0.05) related to a setof 10 environmental variables (chlorinity, NH4+, temperature,PO4-P-, DW, Chl a and Chl b, NO2-N, NO3-N and pH). The mainspatial and seasonal gradients were associated with chlorinityand temperature respectively. The brackish water zone was dominatedby the calanoid Eurytemora affinis in spring, succeeded by Acartiatonsa and mysid species during summer. In the freshwater transect,cyclopoids dominated, together with several cladoceran species.Thermophilic cyclopoid species (Thermocyclops oithonoides, Th.crassus and Mesocyclops leuckarti) occurred during periods ofmaximal temperature. Small molecule HAT inhibitors are useful tools to unravel the role of histone acetyl transferases (HATs) in the cell and have relevance for oncology. We present a systematic investigation of the inhibition of the HAT p300/CBP Associated Factor (PCAF) by isothiazolones with different substitutions. 5-chloroisothiazolones proved to be the most potent inhibitors of PCAF. The growth inhibition of 4 different cell lines was studied and the growth of two cell lines (A2780 and HEK 293) was inhibited at micromolar concentrations by 5-chloroisothiazolones. Furthermore, the 5-chloroisothiazolone preservative Kathon? CG that is used in cosmetics inhibited PCAF and the growth of cell lines A2780 and HEK 293, which indicates that this preservative should be applied with care. 相似文献
